 Wurlitzer Style MIDI Files - Arranged by David StumpfI was born in Cumberland, Maryland June 3, 1945. My parents brought me to New Kensington, Pennsylvania in 1946 while a baby. I am in the same house to this day. Until I was ten years old I didn't hear any carousel music to speak of but recorded band organ music. When I was ten years old and heard a real band organ owned by the Gooding amusement Co. in Moundsville, West Virginia it was such a shock it was the beginning of a lifetime interest in carousel music. It was very likely a Wurlitzer 153, but I had no idea what kind of instrument I was hearing. I saw a couple small band organs the following year. I didn't even know they were called band organs until 1958 when I was 13. The only band organ records available in stores were a few Dutch street organ records. Sometime in the 1960's Gay 90's Village started coming out with band organ records. I kept hearing and seeing band organs whenever I could till I was in my twenties when I decided to try my hand at roll arranging. I was mostly self-taught as far as music was concerned. At first I arranged for the original Wurlitzer Perforator when Doyle Lane had it. After Lane sold out I had to come up with a different method for arranging. I obtained blank player piano roll paper from QRS, cut it to right width marked it in pencil and used a hand punch that punched one hole at a time. Dr. William Black used these rolls in his recordings and Mike Kitner made one roll for sale from these roll punching. In the 1990's Play-Rite made a frame punch for me but it was far from perfect. I had it worked on several times by Alan Erb in California, now it works very well. I might want to learn to arrange by computer eventually as it would be less labor intensive and could if necessary be done in a small apartment.
